Rough Trade Food and Trader Joe’s food stamps will be in the headlines when a U.S. court hears arguments this week.
The two retailers face lawsuits from the U.K. over their use of food stamps in the U .
K. and Canada.
Rough Trade and Trader Jones say they use the programs to help buy goods.
The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization says the food stamps are used to subsidize food and other basic needs and are not intended to reduce poverty.
Food stamp recipients in the United States spend on average about $13 a month on food, according to a 2011 report from the Government Accountability Office.
A study by the Center for Food Safety found that food stamps and other aid are often used to purchase goods at higher prices than those sold through regular retailers.
Some states and municipalities have used food stamp subsidies to help offset the costs of a variety of food services and goods.
In Ontario, a local government in southern Ontario has been using food stamps to help cover expenses of an emergency food drive.
It says it has been able to reduce food prices by $2.7 million, or 25 per cent, through the program.
But many critics say the program is being used to provide benefits for companies and wealthy individuals and businesses that benefit from a high-profile food stamp expansion.
Rough trade says it is in the process of implementing a new food stamp program that will allow customers to shop in grocery stores and other retailers.
“We’ve taken a hard look at what’s best for the people who use the food stamp programs,” said Rough Trade president Joe Riddell.
Riddells company, which operates several U.s. stores, announced last month that it will expand its food stamp sales by 50 per cent to include all of its stores. “
Our plan is for it to come back into the spotlight in a positive way, as a program that allows people to shop for food and the grocery store.”

Rough Food said it expects to continue to sell food and goods through its store across the U, with the addition of more stores across Canada.
The retailer says it plans to provide up to $2,500 in food assistance to every household, regardless of income.
Rough food is also trying to build a presence in the Ontario and New Brunswick regions.
“It’s going really well in those markets,” Riddsell said.
We have people who are able to shop, who are making purchases that they would never make otherwise.””
People have to shop and they can’t afford it.
